Boost your immunity with a ginger turmeric shot balanced with the cold-pressed juice of oranges and lemons.

Are you and your family fighting the cold from you-know-where? Viruses abound this winter, and whether you’re already in the trenches or simply trying to prevent another week of quarantine, a good recipe for immunity wellness shots is a power tool to have in your imunity toolbox this winter. These juice shots are great to drink on their own or to even add to juices like carrot juice or your favorite green juice.

Stop Your Cold in Its Tracks

You may have heard “there’s no cure for the common cold,” but here at PURE we know the benefits of a super-charged immunity system, care of nutrient-dense whole foods. That’s where this zinger of an immunity booster comes in!

Immunity wellness shots are often made from superfoods that are high in vitamin C and other important nutrients that are known to help prevent and fight illness.

This particular recipe includes fresh turmeric, ginger, oranges, and lemons, pairing immune system-boosting vitamin c and potassium from the citrus fruits with the antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral properties of turmeric, as well as the powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of ginger.

Medicinal Roots

The Benefits of Turmeric

In India, turmeric root was traditionally used medicinally for upper respiratory tract infections, skin disorders, joint pain, and digestive issues. Now, research shows vast potential benefits of turmeric as a dietary supplement. Some of its additional uses are to aid in arthritic pain, allergy relief, and even depression.

Turmeric’s seemingly magical ingredient is curcumin, which has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties. Curcumin helps protect the body from a variety of infections, and this is the main reason why we love including turmeric in these powerful wellness shots.

The Benefits of Ginger

Ginger, another traditionally medicinal root, contains gingerol, a compound considered to be powerfully curative and anti-inflammatory. While ginger has been used for centuries as an antinausea compound, there are now studies showing evidence that it may in fact be an ananticancer agent and protective against other diseases.

Cold-Busting Lemon Juice

We know that lemons are chock full of vitamin C, but is there any additional benefits to drinking lemon juice when you’re sick? Yes, indeed – in fact, lemon juice not only helps power up your immune system, but also loosens up congestion.

Do Lemon Ginger Turmeric Shots Taste Good?

In our test kitchen, we’ve tried hundreds of juices, and to be honest, there aren’t many juice combinations we don’t like! But let’s be real: we wouldn’t be sharing this recipe with you if we weren’t 100% sold on the flavor!

We’re big fans of this particular recipe, which is very citrus-forward and has a nice little kick to it, thanks to the ginger and turmeric. The strong taste may be a bit much for some (see below for a tropical juice alternative), but as you’ll see below, we suggest a range in number of oranges to use. Play around with the recipe and make these immune boosting shots according to what makes your taste buds sing.

Orange Juice: Hype or Healthy?

You may have grown up on the idea that drinking a glass of orange juice each morning was a sure way to boost your immunity and stay healthy. But is there any truth to this orange juice hype?

It’s true that one single orange contains all the vitamin C your body needs in a day. Like all juices, however, the overall healthfulness often depends on how the juice is made and whether there are added sugars. Store-bought orange juice, like so many other juices, often contains unneccessary excess sugar that counteracts the powerful benefits of oranges’ vitamin C and anti-inflammatory properties.

On the other hand, cold-pressed orange juice is full of nutritional benefits like folate, potassium, and of course vitamin C, especially if the oranges are pressed with the peel on!

Pro tip: to maximize the nutritional benefits of oranges, leave the peel on while pressing. You may also choose to peel your oranges first; it’s a matter of personal preference. We happen to love a little rind in our juice!

How to Juice Ginger and Turmeric with a PURE Juicer

Yes, it’s true you can use powdered turmeric and pre-sliced ginger, but when you’ve got a powerful cold-press juicer on hand, why wouldn’t you make use of it?

First, we suggest you prep the ginger and turmeric by removing any ‘old’ parts and cutting large pieces so they fit into the feed chute. We clean them in water and a little bit of apple cider vinegar. Then they are ready for the grinder.

Using NO GRID TRAY at all, we grind the ginger and turmeric into a bowl or directly into a press bag or press cloth. With a 1.5 C scooper, we place the mash into the center of the cloth and fold the cloth in a tic-tac-toe style.

Pro tip: make sure all pulp is inside the middle square of the cloth (it will try to sneak out if you don’t). If you use a bag, fold the stitched side so it’s on the inside.

A Note About Grinding Ginger and Turmeric

Ginger and turmeric are fibrous so this is an instance where we recommend you remove the grid plate for large batches of ginger and turmeric juice.  The grinder doesn’t get jammed this way and the yield is still excellent.

Pro tip: Use a chopstick to get into the hard-to-reach corners of the feed chute to make sure you’re getting out ALL the ginger and turmeric pulp!

Ginger Turmeric Immunity Shot Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 lemons
  • 1-2 cups ginger
  • 1/2 – 1 cup turmeric (half the amount of ginger used)
  • 2-6 oranges (depending on how strong you want the shots)

Directions

  1. Wash produce in water and a little bit of apple cider vinegar.
  2. Prep oranges by cutting them in half (rind on or off).
  3. Prep lemons by slicing them into a fan shape.
  4. Wrap lemons and oranges, using a liner and either a bag or cloth, and press. Set juice aside.
  5. Prep the ginger and turmeric by trimming and then cutting in half lengthwise.
  6. Do not use a grid plate; just the grid tray.
  7. Turn the PURE Juicer ON.
  8. Place ginger and turmeric into the feed chute and use the pusher to feed them through.
  9. Wiggle the grid tray to get excess pulp to fall through.
  10. With a 1.5 C scooper, place the mash into the center square of the press cloth.
  11. Fold the pulp into the cloth tic-tac-toe style before placing on the press plate.
  12. Turn the press on 100% until it reaches the full cloth/bag and then slow to half the speed.
  13. Release the press when the stream of the juice breaks.
  14. Fold the cloths or bags in half, and press again for maximum yield.

How much juice do you put in a wellness shot?

Typically, shots of immune boosting juice are lower in quantity, and you can reap their benefits with as little as 2oz. Ginger and turmeric are potent flavors, so we recommend drinking 5 oz at a time, at most.

How long will this juice last?

For the longest shelf life, we recommend you store this juice in glass jars, filled to the top. Freeze the juice up to 30 days.

Turn Your Immunity Shot into a Tropical Drink

One of our favorite hacks is to prepare these lemon ginger turmeric shots alongside a pitcher of freshly-pressed pineapple juice. Simply prepare the recipe above, then wrap 1/3 of a large pineapple in a press cloth and press, no liner required.
