How do we make our mouths water, generate less waste, and see the world more optimistically, all through the PURE Juicer? By Jen Longtin

“I am a woman who works, who is also a wife and mother and in the past few years, a teacher, counselor, chef, cleaner, entertainer”… says most women I talk to. So when Covid hit, life for women in my community–and I am sure most others–went uncomfortably still. The shutdowns in Seattle were some of the first and I held it together these past two years by sticking to a few essentials. I checked in on my loved ones regularly, exercised five to seven days a week, had strong faith, and began creating every concoction under the sun using my PURE Juicer.

Using my fruits and vegetables to the next level has kept me recharged and connected to my food, body, and community. What was first a simple act of juicing to add more phytonutrients to my diet has now become a playful approach to how I digest life.

Our eyes are the gateway to our digestion.
Science has proven our digestion begins the moment our eyes see our food. Our mouths water the minute we see something we are going to eat. And on the contrary, if we see something that we don’t like to eat, our body starts to stress and slow digestion. Ayurveda, a century-old system of medicine focused on integrating the body, mind, and spirit, has a similar concept in that we digest life the same way, through our eyes. We either salivate for what we see in life, or we do not.  And my experiment these past two years has shown me that I can digest my food and my life easier with more fruits and vegetables, and more play.

In this blog, it is my honor and my goal is to make your mouth water with juice, food, and possibilities. My team and I created delicious new juice recipes, and through the practice of play, we have found ways to use the juice and the PURE pulp for food, treats, cleaning products, and other creations to bring us joy.

In addition to the beauty of these creations, we are fortunate to have our medical advisor, Gillian Ehrlich, ARNP, highlight the health benefits of the ingredients and how these phytonutrients are supporting our health.

Why do we juice?

Juicing is not just for cleanses and fasts. Juice is flavorful and colorful. It takes our drinks, foods, and desserts to the next level.

How Does PURE Juicer Compare?

A two-stage juicer has two steps. A grinder and a press. Like a wine press or olive oil maker. The grinder uses a half-horse power motor to grind all produce–from the crunchiest carrots to the toughest watermelon rind–quickly, leaving the produce as cold as it started. The more you juice, the more you crave juice. And with more juice comes pulp. So we have created some new recipes for juice and then share some of our latest revelations on using pulp.

What Can We Do With The Pulp?

Pulp is the insoluble fiber that is extracted from the juice. By extracting the pulp, our bodies need less energy to digest the food, making juice a gentle way to nourish the body.

Pulp is perfect for our compost bins and gardens, plus the worms love it. This leftover fiber breaks down quickly and nourishes our soil to give us another season of fresh produce. Some friends sprinkle the pulp into their soil; others add it to their compost bins, sometimes with a bit of water because the PURE pulp is completely dry.

We also know that fiber is essential for a healthy gut (microbiome) and enjoy experimenting with ways to add the fibrous pulp to our existing favorite recipes. For example, we add a cup of pulp (plus water) to our blended soups and tomato sauces…giving them a hearty texture with filling results.

Many people are sensitive to synthetic fragrances, and our homes are filled with them from fabric softener to dish soap instead of purchasing commercial cleaning products made with synthetic scents. We make our own all-natural cleaning products. , We use the fragrant peels of lemons, oranges, and grapefruit for fragrance and combine them with everyday kitchen staples like vinegar, olive oil, and baking soda we have created our own home cleaning products. I feel better, my home smells better, and my dog’s nose is happier.

Our latest discovery is dropping bright juice and pulp into pasta to create colorful pasta with a story to share when you feed it to friends and family.

In the morning, use just the stage one side of the PURE juicer to blend whole frozen fruits into sweet treats into breakfast açai bowls or oatmeal. In the evening use it to make fresh fruit sorbet, ice cream, and dessert treats for the family.

Boil cloves, allspice, basil, lemons, pineapple rind, ginger, turmeric, and oranges for homemade tea or potpourri. Both are perfect for a relaxing evening.

And don’t forget to try blending your cucumber-apple pulp with aloe vera and rose oil (or a scent of your choosing) to create a ‘mud’ mask that will leave your face tingly and alive!

Recipes

Any homemade pasta can be turned into a delicious elixir feast. Simply take the pulp from any of these recipes and add about a tablespoon of the pulp to it. You can replace some of the water with the juice to enhance the color too. We have a recipe and demo in an earlier blog post

Big Juice: Every season, we like to recommend a few of our favorite green juices. It is a great way to meet our daily requirement of greens and if you drink these in the morning, they are a gentle way to ‘break our fast’ from the nighttime, gently waking up our digestive system. These two are crowd-pleasers and truly celebrate spring!

All make 20 ounces of juice using a PURE Juicer. The serving size is 10-20 ounces.

Make My Mouth Water!

All juices are fresh and full of life. And the pulp from these juices can be used to make vegetable stock (simply add the pulp to a pot with water and simmer for an hour), or it can be used to make any sauce more hearty. In this image, we added pulp from the green juice and some of the elixirs to our spaghetti sauce.

Masks that are fresh and revitalizing! And we took the pulp from the cucumber-apple juice and combined it with 2 tablespoons of aloe vera (fresh from a leaf or use aloe juice), 2 tablespoons of honey, and 3 drops of rose oil. The mask is more like mud so we placed the mask on our faces. Then we sat back and drank our juice.

Daily Immune Boosters: Decreasing inflammation and increasing about ability to digest food are two big factors in building our immune system. This juice is designed to do both while also tasting like a ray of sunshine!

This recipe makes 30 ounces of juice using a PURE Juicer. The serving size is 10 ounces.

Rays of Sunshine: 

3 lemons
3 oranges
2 cups of ginger & turmeric
⅓ pineapple

Make My Mouth Water!

This juice is one of the best things we have ever made. It is so good, we are delighted to find ways to use the pulp for more delicious creations. In this edition, we used the pulp to create an immune-booster tea. Add a little bit of the juice for a stronger flavor.

We added star anise, cinnamon, and cardamom for some extra spice. Sweeten to your desire.

And we didn’t stop there. We used some extra leftover lemon peel to create a wood polish and multi-purpose cleaner.

The polish used lemon rind, 1 cup of olive oil, ¼ of vinegar, and a touch of lemon juice.

The cleaner used lemon rind, 1 cup of water, three drops of liquid soap, 2 tablespoons of vinegar, and a teaspoon of baking soda. Careful when combining these ingredients. Add slowly (or add fast and see how many bubbles can be made – it’s like a school science project).

Sneaky Treats!
Ice cream – What we call frozen fruit blended through a PURE Juicer. It tastes like ice cream and the texture is like ice cream. But there are zero preservatives and no added sugar.  Fruits are full of nutrients that our bodies love. The rich yellows, purples, and reds all represent unique phytonutrients that also taste remarkable. These recipes are just the beginning and we invite you to simply buy your favorite fruits, freeze them, and blend them into the most amazing treat your taste buds have ever had.

Makes 4 servings. The serving size is ½ cup. Run all ingredients through the PURE Juicer grinder using a #2 grid, or blend. (Please note that if you are using a blender, you will need to add milk or water for better blending).

He basically eliminated the standard German diet, which is also sadly known as the SAD (standard American diet), as well. He developed a fruit and vegetable regimen, filled with juices that we will delve into soon.

He began using this migraine diet on his patients. One patient came back to him and said not only are their headaches gone but their skin tuberculosis dried up and was disappeared. At this time in history, tuberculosis was incurable. So, as you can imagine, this discovery was a very big deal. Dr. Gerson shared his knowledge with thousands of patients and when he passed away, his work was carried on by his daughter, Charlotte Gerson, and now with the Gerson Institute and the Gerson Center in Tijuana.

The basics from the ‘Gerson’ perspective:

What is a healthy body?

According to Gerson, a healthy body starts in the gut and there is one word that he reiterates over and over again.  That word is metabolism.  Metabolism is the breakdown of food into energy.  When ‘illness happens, people cannot properly convert their food to energy. This can be caused, after compromising their gut with processed food, alcohol, antibiotics, sweets, etc. for many years of their lives.

How do we restore a gut that has been abused for decades by environmental toxins, processed foods, saturated fats, excessive sugar, salt, alcohol, and caffeine?  We start by eliminating ALL of the above and replacing them with loads of organic fruits and vegetables in the form of juice and food.

What is alkalinity and why is it so important?

When we speak about alkalinity versus acidity, we are talking about the pH (potential hydrogen acidity – or buildup of hydrogen in the body). When you hear the word “saturated fats,” you need to know that it is also saturated with hydrogen. Too much hydrogen disrupts the electrical charge at the level of the cell membrane so that oxygen can’t get into the cell. Basically, acidity is the buildup of hydrogen which is causing people to become ill.

Being alkaline is so important because when the body is acidic, and oxygen tries to enter the cells so that the mitochondria can convert sugar to energy, it literally gets repelled away.  What it will produce instead of energy is lactic acid, which ultimately is believed to feed disease.  It turns normal cells into a fermented fungal nature otherwise known as cancer. The good news is when we restore the alkalinity through fruits and vegetables, and we stop eating the acidic diet, (highly processed and heavy in saturated fats and empty sugar), we can create health back in the body.

When we juice and eat cooked, healthy meals with Gerson Therapy, all of those calories are well received and gentler on the system.  They are easily absorbed and the mitochondria are restored. *Sugar in fruits and vegetables is not bad, in fact, it is GOOD when we have a healthy, alkaline system! These are healing and energy-giving foods!

The only oil Gerson found safe to eat was flax oil. He tried them all. Flax oil is a polyunsaturated fatty acid. It has absolutely no hydrogen bonded to the oil. Flax oil starts restoring the cell membrane. It literally acts as a magnet to draw oxygen into the cell, unlike saturated fats which repel oxygen.

Why no salt?

Sodium chloride in all forms (including Himalayan salt) is believed to be destructive to healing. The goal is to eliminate all table salt from the body and re-establish normal cellular metabolism.  The reason why sodium is destructive is that it displaces iodine from the thyroid gland. The thyroid’s specific job in your body is to make mitochondria. Mitochondria convert sugar into energy.

We want to remain alkaline and get oxygen into the cells so that the mitochondria can do their job. If we are acidic, oxygen can’t get into the cells, and sugar gets broken down into lactic acid which feeds cancer and other diseases. Sodium also makes the body lose potassium and that causes the cells’ integrity to collapse.

Therefore, salt must be eliminated to heal.  That is also why celery juice is not part of the Gerson Therapy protocol.  *Celery has health benefits for sure, but for those who are ill and are following Gerson Therapy, there is too much salt in the juice for their diet.

What does one consume on Gerson Therapy?

What are the juices?

On the Gerson Therapy, patients ingest 20 pounds of organic fruits and vegetables, every single day. They drink a fresh, cold-pressed juice every hour, on the hour from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, which is 13 juices every single day! There is an all-orange juice in the a.m. There are four green juices every day.  There is a lot of carrot juice on this protocol and that is because they are loaded with beta carotene which is an incredible antioxidant!  It plays a major role in cancer prevention.  Granny Smith apples are the apple of choice because of the malic acid which fires up the metabolism and the mitochondria require malic acid.

Orange Juice

Ingredients for 8 oz / 236 ml Orange Juice:

• 2 organic oranges

GREEN JUICE

Ingredients for 8 oz / 236 ml Green Juice:

• 6-7 big leaves (with stalk) of romaine
• Red leaf lettuce
• 2-3 leaves of escarole
• 2-3 leaves of endive
• 3-4 leaves of red cabbage
• 2-3 young inner beet tops (inner leaves)
• 2 leaves of Swiss chard
• A quarter of a green bell pepper
• 3-4 leaves of watercress
• 1 medium green apple, Granny Smith, or as sour and hard as possible 

CARROT/APPLE JUICE

Ingredients for 8 oz / 236 ml Carrot/Apple Juice:

• 3-4 organic carrots

1 large green apple, Granny Smith, or as sour and tart as possible

CARROT JUICE

Ingredients for 8 oz / 236 ml Orange Juice:

• 5-6 organic carrots

Dr. Vickers and his team at the Gerson Clinic add lemon, fresh aloe, and raw living spirulina to the juices for their healing and alkaline nature to the gut as well.

Cooked foods?

Many are curious why our patients eat cooked foods. Dr. Gerson was adamant that sick patients with a damaged gut must get three cooked meals a day.  The rationale is that an unhealthy gut cannot break down raw vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots and must be cooked to easily convert them to energy.

No nuts or seeds?

Nuts and seeds tend to be hard on the digestive tract and the liver.  Therefore, even healthy foods such as cucumbers, strawberries, pomegranates, and almonds are prohibited.

Why coffee enemas?

How does coffee take rectally help cure disease?  Using knowledge from WWII at the end of the war, in Germany, there was no medicine left. Nurses used enemas for many reasons back then and when they ran out of pain meds, and all they had left was coffee, they added coffee to the enemas and the patients surprisingly felt relief.  Digging into why this is, Dr. Gerson found that our liver produces an enzyme called glutathione transferase, which happens to be one of the most potent detoxifying enzymes in the body.  The liver requires palmitic acid to produce glutathione transferase.  Specifically roasted, organic coffee from a certain bean is loaded with palmitic acid. Dr. Gerson was able to demonstrate that when you do a coffee enema, the production of glutathione transferase goes up to 700% greater than normal.  With trial and error, he found that five coffee enemas per day were part of the protocol for patients that are particularly toxic.  The practice of using enemas was not uncommon 100 years ago for the flu and other ailments, and this was part of how Dr. Gerson discovered it. *This is very different than drinking coffee which isn’t allowed since coffee ingested as a drink depletes the body. When we drink coffee, a diuretic, we eliminate so many vitamins and minerals when we urinate.

TWO-STAGE JUICER COMPARISON

Norwalk Update: November 2021

The Norwalk Juicer Company closed its doors this month after 87 years, they will be sadly missed by the entire juicing community. PURE Juicer will now be the only two-stage juicer available. Created in 2016, PURE Juicer innovated two-stage juicing and the juicing experience through modern technology and customer input.

We did not anticipate Norwalk going out of business. Our community is full of Norwalk and PURE Juicer owners with the same goal of living healthy lives and drinking the best true cold-pressed juice a home juicer can make. Knowing many in our community will need parts and/or services for your Norwalk, we are working on ways to support you.

PURE Juicer makes all its juicing parts from food-grade stainless steel, we redesigned the feed tube for easier use and less kickback. We incorporated an eight-tooth stainless steel cutter and increased the pressing force to 2.5-tons. These changes produce the highest yield and a better juicing experience.

In an effort to carry the legacy of two-stage juicing forward and to support the community who is unsure what to do next, we would like to share what we can do:

Juicing is one of the four components of the Gerson Therapy.

The hourly fresh and organic juices are flooding the body with live, active nutrients, eliminating toxins and restoring the cellular function.

On the full therapy, the Gerson Patient drinks 13 x 8oz fresh juices daily:
1 orange, 4 green, 5 carrot/apple, and 3 carrot juices

ORANGE JUICE

Ingredients for 8 oz / 236 ml Orange Juice:

• 2 organic oranges

Unlike the other juices for the Gerson Therapy, the orange juice should not be prepared in your two-step juice machine so the skin of the fruit to does not release any aromatic oils, which can interfere with the Gerson Therapy.
Instead of using your PURE Juicer for the morning juice, use a simple manual reamer-style citrus juicer.

In cases of diabetes, arthritis and inflammatory/allergic conditions, Gerson Practitioners often substitute the orange juice for another carrot/apple juice.

GREEN JUICE

Ingredients for 8 oz / 236 ml Green Juice:

• 6-7 big leaves (with stalk) of romaine
• Red leaf lettuce
• 2-3 leaves of escarole
• 2-3 leave of endive
• 3-4 leaves of red cabbage
• 2-3 young inner beet tops (inner leaves)
• 2 leaves of Swiss chard
• A quarter of a green bell pepper
• 3-4 leaves of watercress
• 1 medium green apple, Granny Smith or as sour and hard as possible

Try to include as many of the ingredients as possible and do not substitute.
Add enough of the approved ingredients to end up with an 8 ounce green juice.

Wash all the produce. Cut the apples and leave the core and the seeds out.
Grind your produce into the wet pulp while feeding your produce in the feed tube. Always rotate your produce, since mixing apples with any vegetable boosts all nutrients above what they measure individually.

You can roll up smaller produce into the bigger leaves. Insert the pusher into the feed tube and turn the juicer on. Push the produce through.

When using a press bag, the wet ground up produce falls directly into the bag. Fold the bag and transfer it over to the tray. Place the bag in the middle of the tray.

When using a press cloth, the wet ground up falls directly on the open cloth placed on a tray or baking pan. Fold the cloth according to the directions and transfer it over to the tray. Place the cloth in the middle of the tray.

CARROT/APPLE JUICE

Ingredients for 8 oz / 236 ml Carrot/Apple Juice:

• 3-4 organic carrots
• 1 large green apple, Granny Smith or as sour and tart as possible
