Soothe your system with Turmeric Milk

If you need a warm beverage that will soothe your stomach, ease your mind, brighten your complexion, and prevent disease, you should turn to warm, spiced turmeric milk.

Known as haldi doodh or golden milk, turmeric milk is a traditional beverage from India that has been used for centures as a health tonic passed down through the generations. It’s clear to see its appeal: the turmeric root, which is turmeric milk’s main ingredient, is known for its medicinal properties and is often used in Ayurvedic medicine.

The turmeric root can be ground into a powder or pressed into a juice and added to milk, along with other spices like ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom. This concoction is thought to have numerous health benefits, including aiding in digestion, reducing inflammation, and boosting immunity.

Turmeric milk is an immunity booster

Doctors in India have long recommended drinking warm turmeric milk as a daily preventative measure against the common cold and flu. This is because turmeric contains curcumin, which has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties that help protect the body from a variety of infections.

Traditionally, turmeric milk has been given to brides-to-be to brighten their complexions–and it turns out the beautifying properties of the milk live up to the hype. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin also help to clarify skin, the effects of which you can gain through either drinking the turmeric milk or by applying it directly to your skin.

Turmeric milk can:

prevent breakouts

heal wounds

soothe eczema and psoriasis

minimize scars

lighten under-eye circles

give skin a natural glow

Turmeric Milk Improves Bone Health

We know milk is good for our bones, but it turns out turmeric milk gives an extra boost to bone health. Curcumin in turmeric reduces pain and improves joint functioning in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It also safeguards bone tissue and prevents bone loss.

Mood-boosting milk

The curcumin in turmeric also boosts BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) levels in the brain and boosts serotonin and dopamine. Initial studies comparing the effects of turmeric milk and certain selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have shown promising data that drinking turmeric milk can potentially help people with depression and anxiety.

Time-Saver Turmeric Milk Recipe

For a quick and easy way to make turmeric milk, all you need to do is buy ground turmeric and mix it with spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger before adding it to warmed milk.

But for the most nutritious (and delicious!) version of this magical beverage, consider using your juicer to press homemade turmeric juice.

Turmeric Milk Recipe for the Juicer

At PURE, we like to start with a base of almond milk, which is easy to make in the juicer, but of course you can use any milk you like: almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk, or cow’s milk will all taste delicious with turmeric.

A Note about Spices

These spices are full-bodied, so flavor your milk according to taste. You may choose to add more or less turmeric juice, depending on your mood. If you make your turmeric milk in one big batch and don’t drink it all in one day, be aware that these spices will mellow out after a day in the fridge.

Golden Milk for Bedtime–or Anytime

When is the best time to drink turmeric milk? Honestly, you can drink turmeric milk cold or warmed, at any time of the day. Though, it must be said tradition has it Iand we can confirm!) that drinking it warm, right before bed, is a comforting way to end the day.

Health Benefits

almonds: a fantastic source of healthy fats, fiber, protein, magnesium, vitamin E, and antioxidants, almonds not only assist with blood sugar control and blood pressure regulation, they can also reduce LDL cholesterol and protect your cells from oxidative damage, a major contributor to aging and disease.

cardamom: cardamom may help lower blood pressure and help with digestive issues, thanks to its antioxidant and diuretic properties. It is also rich in compounds that fight inflammation, which helps protect the body from certain chronic diseases.

cinnamon: anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, cinnamon may support both gut health and heart health. Studies show it could also be beneficial to the aging brain, particularly in the case of inhibiting the kinds of proteins that cause Alzheimer’s.

dates: though higher in sugar when dried, dates still maintain a low glycemic index due to the significant amount of fiber they contain. Because of their potent antioxidants, dates are anti-inflammatory and may help prevent the development of certain chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s.

ginger: ginger contains gingerol, considered to be powerfully medicinal and anti-inflammatory, prevents nausea and can help treat chronic indigestion, and may also drastically lower blood sugar levels and heart disease risk factors.

turmeric: turmeric has been found to help prevent Alzheimer’s and cancer. It can also lessen symptoms of depression and arthritis while also being a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

vanilla extract: in addition to the calming scent and pleasing taste of vanilla, there is some evidence that vanilla beans have powerful antioxidant properties, are anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and potentially anticancer.
